(Re)Imagining Home: A Bookmaking Workshop with Mia Leonin and Nereida Garcia Ferraz

Join visual artist Nereida García Ferraz and writer Mia Leonin in a bookmaking workshop that weaves together memoir and the visual arts to explore travel, migration, and community. Engaging in image transfer, drawing, and book design techniques, we will map out new connections between our personal histories and our collective experiences. Participants will write, draw, paint, paste, and collage. Creating in community, we will forge new connections to each other and Miami. No writing or artmaking experience necessary.

​​Participants can bring the following materials for collage:
Maps, book pages, letters, newspapers, photographs, magazines, used books. 

This event is part of Miami Book Fair’s 2022 Big Read program.

Mia Leonin is the author of four poetry collections: Fable of the Pack-Saddle Child (BkMk Press), Braid, Unraveling the Bed, and Chance Born (Anhinga Press), and a memoir, Havana and Other Missing Fathers (University of Arizona Press). Leonin has been awarded fellowships from the State of Florida Department of Cultural Affairs for her poetry and creative nonfiction, two Money for Women grants by the Barbara Deming Fund, and she has been a fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts/Annenberg Institute on Theater and Musical Theater. Leonin has published poetry and creative nonfiction in New Letters, Prairie Schooner, Alaska Quarterly Review, Notre Dame Review, Guernica, Indiana Review, Witness, North American Review, River Styx, Chelsea, and others. She has written extensively about Spanish-language theater and culture for the Miami Herald, New Times, ArtburstMiami.com, and other publications. Leonin teaches creative writing at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

Nereida Garcia Ferraz  was born in Havana, Cuba. Garcia Ferraz received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1981) in Photography and Painting. Her work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad in such venues as The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Museo del Chopo and Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, and FOCI at Illinois State Museum. She has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Award (1986, 1991), an Illinois Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowship (1986, 1988, 1992), MacArthur Foundation Media Award (1994), and the Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship (2000) from the  San Francisco Art Institute, among others. She has worked with the Women on the Rise Collective at MOCA in North Miami, and Brick by Brick (2009 -2020), the NEH award winner Outreach education program PAMM. Her studio space has been at The Fountainhead Studios since 2012.


(Re)Imaginando nuestro hogar: un taller de creación de libros con Mia Leonin y Nereida García Ferraz

Acompaña a la artista visual Nereida García Ferraz y a la escritora Mia Leonin en un taller de creación de libros que combina los recuerdos y las artes visuales para explorar los viajes, la migración y la comunidad. Mediante técnicas de transferencia de imágenes, dibujo y diseño de libros, encontraremos nuevas conexiones entre nuestras historias personales y nuestras experiencias colectivas. Los participantes escribirán, dibujarán, pintarán, pegarán y harán collage. Creando en comunidad, forjaremos nuevas conexiones entre nosotros y Miami. No es necesario tener experiencia en escritura o creación artística.

Los participantes pueden traer los siguientes materiales para el collage:
mapas, páginas de libros, cartas, periódicos, fotografías, revistas, libros usados, etc
