Creole, Creolish: Regionalisms in Haitian Creole (Pale moun nan Nò ak pale moun nan Lwès ak Sid) with Prof. Jean-Robert Placide and Prof. Yvon Lamour. Moderated by Ms. Sherley Louis, Ms.Ed. Every language has regional dialects. Haitian Creole is also subject to these variations. In Northern Creole, there are words, phrases, and pronunciations that are different from other regions of Haiti. Haitians in the Southern and Western parts of the country do not have these words in their vocabulary. Sometimes, even the same words have different meanings depending on where they are spoken.

In this panel, we examine this phenomenon and ask: Do these regional variations stem from the linguistic separation that took place after Jean-Jacques Dessalines’s death, when two education systems emerged in Haiti, one in French in the South and the West with Pétion; the other one in English in the North/North-West with Henri Christophe?

Jean-Robert Duré Placide, a Jacmel native, is a linguist, educator, and lecturer. He started his schooling at République du Libéria, a school administered by Canadian monks located on 1ère Rue Lavaud, Bois-Verna. He completed his studies at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He is currently a faculty member at the Commission Scolaire de Montréal (CSDM). He teaches French, his secondary language, and Creole, his mother tongue. He is a Language Science technician, with special interest in language research in the area of Creole Lexicology which is intertwined with the etymology of African languages. He is an important member of the Canadian section of Sosyete Koukouy, the first literary movement for the Creole language. He has published several academic articles on Creole grammar and vocabulary, on the Potomitan web site, in the Haiti en Marche newspaper and in Pawòl Kreyòl, Sosyete Koukouy's literary magazine. He has contributed to the writing of several books, such as Yon amenajman lengwistik pou devlopman pèp ayisyen an (2012), which is about language planning for the development of Haitian people. Yvon Lamour is a recognized leader, and an advocate for the Haitian community, with decades of experience as a guidance counselor, teacher, and Teacher-In-Charge of the Bilingual English Language Acquisition Department and the International Student and Family Center at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Lamour guides students of varied races and ethnicities as they plan for their future. In 1983, following his attendance at the Haitian Creole Institute at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, Lamour founded the HCDC-Haitian Creole Development Center for the purpose of conducting language courses and seminars, developing, and disseminating Haitian Creole materials. He has organized teacher trainings in 70+ communities throughout Haiti, and has taught Haitian Creole for Haitians and non-Haitians alike. An author and the recipient of various community awards, he also enjoys a high standing for his never-ending involvement in community affairs related to politics, culture, linguistics, and education. Lamour received his B.S. in English Literature with a minor in ESL-English as a Second Language from University of Massachusetts/Boston, and his M.Ed. and M.S.W. from Boston University.
