In her collection of essays You’re Leaving When?: Adventures in Downward Mobility, Annabelle Gurwitch offers a hilarious chronicle of financial and emotional downward mobility. It’s a book for anybody who thought they had a semblance of security but wound up with a fragile economy and a blankie. Once a promising young novelist, Jacob Finch Bonner, the protagonist of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s The Plot: A Novel is teaching in a third-rate MFA program. Then Evan, one of his students, tells him the plot of his book in progress. It’s a sure thing, he boasts. And he might be right. But then Evan dies and Jacob writes the book with Evan’s plot. He finds wealth and fame – and then an anonymous email arrives that says: You are a thief.
