Sponsor Spotlight: Annie Garcia, T-Mobile

T-Mobile has a stated commitment to building stronger, more equitable communities, and to supporting youth – how does your support of Miami Book Fair align with those goals?

At T-Mobile, we believe that access to education is access to opportunity. In addition to providing free (Wi-Fi) hot spots to eligible K-12 students through our Project 10Million, we want to be a part of initiatives that align with these beliefs. Miami Book Fair offers a great variety of authors, events, and collaboration with educators that will continue to drive diversity and inclusion. That matches how we serve our communities.

Why is supporting cultural institutions like Miami Book Fair so important to the communities they serve?

Enriching our communities with cultural institutions will continue to be a catalyst for change where we can achieve a greater understanding of our diverse cultures, allowing us to both celebrate our differences and bring us closer together when we discover that perhaps, at the core, we are more united than we believe.

Tell me about the last great book that you read, and I’d love to know what’s waiting for you on your nightstand to crack into next.

I recently finished The Storyteller’s Secret by Sejal Badani, which was very inspiring, as it’s dedicated to relentless love and loyalty, and reinforced for me how fortunate we are to live in a country where we enjoy more freedom than other parts of the world. The book I’m reading now is Impossible to Forget by Imogen Clark, and so far it’s great.

What was your favorite book as a child or teenager, the one you went back to again and again?

Definitely the Nancy Drew collections! They kept me dreaming of adventure and bravery in my early teens.

You’re invited to a one-on-one dinner with the author of your choice – who is that author and why did you choose them?

That’s easy – Gabriel García Márquez. He was an amazing writer and I would love to have known him. He strikes a perfect balance of realism with passion for people that speaks to me. My favorite García Márquez quote is “It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.”
