The Big Read 2020

The Big Read is a national initiative dedicated to supporting organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs that encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. Miami Book Fair has been part of The Big Read since its inception by the National Endowment for the Arts 14 years ago, and has brought cultural programming to thousands of South Floridians relating to a variety of titles, including Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake, Vaddey Ratner’s In the Shadow of the Banyan, and Brother I’m Dying by Edwidge Danticat, among other books.

The Big Read Miami 2020: March 1 – 31

Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, by famed New Yorker cartoonist and award-winning author Roz Chast, captures Chast’s complicated relationship with her aging parents as it becomes her turn to be the caregiver of the family. Presented as a graphic memoir, those interested in a quick, yet emotionally intense read will be immediately pulled in by its expressive drawings, unflinching candor, and surprising humor.

During the month of March, Miami Book Fair will present events that promote community-togetherness, open literary discussion, and creative expression. All activities will explore the themes found in Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?—from capturing the life stories of South Floridian elders in partnership with HistoryMiami Museum, to free creative writing workshops for seniors, artistic storytelling workshops for grandparents and their grandchildren, to a workshop for teens on making comics, the film documentary, LOS VIEJOS, about Cuba’s elderly musicians, a keynote presentation by Roz Chast, MDC class visits by Ladysitting author Lorene Cary,  and a pop-up exhibit by artist Linda Faneuf, whose subject matter has always been the elderly ladies of South Beach.

Free copies of Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? will be provided to audiences attending events (as long as supplies last), Miami Dade County Public Library’s reading discussion groups, and Miami Dade College students.

The Big Read Miami 2020 is presented in partnership with the Miami Dade County Public Library System, Books & Books, HistoryMiami Museum, the Miami Film Festival, The Miami Workshop, and others.
