STEPHEN FRIED is a journalist, bestselling author, and lecturer who teaches at Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of six nonfiction books, including Rush, his biography of founding father Dr. Benjamin Rush, and Appetite for America, Bitter Pills, The New Rabbi, and Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia. He co-authored, with Patrick J. Kennedy, Profiles in Mental Health Courage (Dutton) and A Common Struggle. A two-time winner of the National Magazine Award, Fried has written for Vanity Fair, GQ, Smithsonian magazine, Glamour, and Philadelphia Magazine. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, author Diane Ayres.
