Peniel E. Joseph is the Barbara Jordan Chair in Ethics and Political Values at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and professor of history and the founding director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a frequent national commentator on issues of Antiracism, Democracy and Civil Rights. He has written several previous books on African American history, including The Sword and The Shield and Stokely: A Life. The Sword and the Shield was named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2020. He lives in Austin, Texas.
