(Klarriech, Kathie) Kathie Klarriech was a Knight International Journalism Fellow working on a project to train journalists to follow aid money in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake. Klarreich first wrote about Haiti in 1986. She moved there in 1988 and spent the next 10 years writing and reporting for print (TIME, Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times); radio (National Public Radio, Monitor, Pacifica), and television (PBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, BBC). In 1993, Klarreich founded the English section of Haiti’s only press agency, Agence Haitienne de Presse. In 1998, she moved to Miami, where she continued to cover Haiti and taught writing at the university level and at a state penitentiary for women. Her memoir, Madame Dread: A Tale of Love, Vodou and Civil Strife (Nation Books) captures her decade in Haiti against a backdrop of social, political, cultural and economic turmoil.
