JIM DEFEDE was born in Brooklyn, New York, and landed his first job in journalism in 1986 as the night cops reporter in Spokane, Washington. In 1991, he moved to South Florida to work for Miami New Times. Between 2002 and 2005, DeFede was a metro columnist for the Miami Herald, before he was unceremoniously fired. His first book, The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland (William Morrow) was published in 2002 and recognized with a 2003 Christopher Award. He is currently an investigative reporter for CBS News Miami.
