DAÍNA CHAVIANO is an expatriate Cuban author of novels, novellas, short stories, and scripts for film and television. Her first book, the short story collection Los mundos que amo/The Worlds I Love, written while she attended the University of Havana, became an instant classic. Some of her subsequent books include Amoroso planeta/Loving Planet, Historias de hadas para adultos/Fairy Tales for Adults, and Fábulas de una abuela extraterrestre/Fables from an Extraterrestrial Grandmother. She defected to the United States in 1991, worked as a journalist and translator for El Nuevo Herald, and wrote a four-book series of novels called The Occult Side of Havana. The fourth entry, La isla de los amores infinitos/The Island of Eternal Love, was widely translated.
