ALEJANDRO PORTES is a law professor and distinguished arts and sciences scholar at the University of Miami, and the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle S. Beck Professor of Sociology (emeritus) and founding director of the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University. He has written 250 articles and chapters on national development, international migration, Latin American and Caribbean urbanization, and economic sociology, and has published 30 books, including City on the Edge – The Transformation of Miami, co-authored with Alex Stepick, and Immigrant America: A Portrait, now in its fourth edition.

CARIE PENABAD is a distinguished alumna of the University of Miami and Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She is currently a professor at UM, where she previously served as an associate dean of research and as director of the undergraduate program. She has taught at a variety of institutions, including Northeastern and the Boston Architectural Center, and in 2024 will serve as the William Henry Bishop Visiting Chair of Architecture at Yale. Her publications include Marion Manley: Miami’s First Woman Architect (University of Georgia Press, 2010); Call to Order: Sustaining Simplicity in Architecture (ORO Publishers, 2018) and the forthcoming book Made in Miami/Hecho en Miami (ACTAR Publishers, 2024). Parallel to her academic work, Penabad is a partner in the Miami-based firm of CURE & PENABAD, whose work has received numerous accolades including nearly 30 American Institute of Architects awards. Most recently the firm received the prestigious Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York, a competition that recognizes individuals with a distinct design voice and a significant body of realized work. Penabad also hosts the international radio program/podcast ON CITIES, which is dedicated to the design of our cities and the ways in which the built environment shapes the quality of our lives.

ROBIN FAITH BACHIN is the Charlton W. Tebeau Associate Professor of History, senior associate dean for undergraduate education, and founding director of the Office of Civic and Community Engagement at the University of Miami. She has published widely on topics including universities and community engagement, the history of urban planning and design, and the intersections of urban and environmental history. She is a nationally renowned leader in promoting civic engagement in higher education. Bachin is also project director for the Miami Housing Solutions Lab and past president of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History.
