In the horror graphic novel The Keeper, Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due tell the story of Aisha, a young Black girl devastated after losing her parents and trapped between her grandmother’s wish to protect her and their family’s dark history. Inspired by the Japanese “yokai” and the “jorogumo” spider demon, Alma Katsu‘s The Fervor: A Novel explores the horrors of the supernatural beyond the threat of the occult. It’s 1944, and as World War II rages on, Meiko Briggs and her daughter, Aiko, are sent to an internment camp in the Midwest. Then a mysterious disease begins to spread among those interned that results in violence, even death. And in Silvia Moreno-Garcia‘s The Daughter of Doctor Moreau readers are introduced to Carlota, the only daughter of a researcher who is either a genius or a madman; Montgomery Laughton, an overseer with a tragic past; The Hybrids, human-animal beings; and Eduardo Lizalde, the son of Dr. Moreau’s patron who begins a dangerous chain reaction between passion and secrets.
