March 15:
Instructor: Conor McCreery
Theme: Writing for comics (and everything else)
Join comic writer Conor McCreery for a fun and fast-paced journey on how to write for comics – and everything else. He’ll discuss everything from why originality is overrated, to how to plan your story, the two layers every good story MUST have and the three ‘masks’ your characters should wear. Students will come away with the beginnings of a beat sheet for a story they have in their head, an understanding of the nuts and bolts of the comic process, and as a warm-up exercise, engage in a group storytelling session where anyone can help build the story.
Conor McCreery is the swashbuckling wordsmith behind the Kill Shakespeare series (IDW), an action-adventure take on the Bard’s characters that spawns five volumes (and counting), a stage play and a board game. Conor also created the YA adventure series, The Last Witch (BOOM!) and has told stories for brands like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Assassin’s Creed and more. A former journalist who worked on three continents, Conor started his career in the Canadian film and television industry. His newest projects are a magic realism comics biography of the legendary Fela Kuti: Music is the Weapon (Harper Collins_),_ the coming-of-age tale Status (Scholastic), the horror-comedy Trickster (TPub!), and as the head writer and co-creator of Embreate Productions transmedia Science Fiction story-world, Future Now, as well as serving as a writer and consultant on the spin-off game The Gathering. He lives in Toronto with his wife and three children.
