Join us online for Speak Up, a teen creative writing program supporting the artistic and professional growth of teens.

In this FREE virtual creative writing workshop mini-series, teens will partner with experienced teaching artists to empower the creative writing process, from drafting to performance to publishing, to boost literacy and empower youth in Miami through community-based writing activities.

The program is open to all teens (ages 13-19) and is as free of charge as it is free of homework. No previous experience necessary!

February 22:

Instructor: Jiordan Castle
Theme: Finding Your Voice in Verse

Poetry can be freeing or daunting (or both!), depending on your relationship to it. In this session, we’ll delve into the power of poetics and help you access your inner poet to make meaning on the page. Whether you’re new to writing poems or working on a larger verse project, like a lyric essay or even a novel in verse, you’ll find new ways to get unstuck and motivate yourself with short readings, prompts, and exercises you can take into the future.

Jiordan Castle is the author of Disappearing Act, a memoir in verse. Her writing appears in The New Yorker, The Rumpus, The Millions, and elsewhere, including the anthologies Best New Poets 2024 and What My Father and I Don’t Talk About (2025). She received her MFA in poetry from Hunter College and now lives in Philadelphia with her husband and their dog.
