Place Poetics: Landscape, Memory, and Journey: A Poetry Workshop with Kenzie Allen

Wednesdays, May 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th (4 weeks) via Zoom
7 – 9 p.m. EST (2 hours)

What are the place memories we carry with us, and where do our best stories live? How might our favorite landscapes offer new inspirations, and how might we invoke a deeper experience of place for our readers? In this 4 week workshop, we’ll look at poetry of place, including landscape- and eco-poetics, mapping and travel narratives, and site-specific writing and art, to chart new geographies across mediums and across time and space itself.

Miami Book Fair is offering two (2) full-tuition scholarships for MDC students interested in attending the above-listed creative writing workshop. Applicants must be currently-enrolled, (full time or part time) degree-seeking Miami Dade College students with a demonstrated financial need. Kenzie Allen is an Assistant Professor of English at York University, specializing in Creative Writing and Indigenous Literatures. Her research centers on documentary and visual poetics, literary cartography, and the enactment of Indigenous sovereignties through creative works. She is a first-generation descendant of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Kenzie is the author of Cloud Missives (Tin House, 2024). A finalist for the 2022 National Poetry Series, she is the recipient of a 92NY Discovery / Joan Leiman Jacobson Poetry Prize, a James Welch Prize for Indigenous Poets from Poetry Northwest, the 49th Parallel Award in poetry from Bellingham Review, broadside prizes from Littoral Press and Sundress Publications, grants from Ontario Arts Council, and fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, Aspen Summer Words, and Indigenous Nations Poets (In-Na-Po).
