ON PHOTOGRAPHY: THE UNFLINCHING EYE

ANTONIO “TONY” CHIRINOS is a Venezuelan-born documentary-style artist based in Miami. His career spans more than 40 years exploring the theme of death and the vulnerability of life. He is recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2023) and South Florida Cultural Consortium (2010) fellowships; a recipient of a Callanan Excellence in Teaching Award (2019); and was awarded a William Talbott Hillman Foundation grant (2021) to financially assist in the printing production of his first monograph, The Precipice (Gnomic Books). Chirinos has an MFA from Columbia University, trained as a biomedical photographer at Miami Children’s Hospital, and created the medical photography department at Baptist Health. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in the Third Bronx Latin American Art Biennial, The Washington Post, photo-eye, Nueva Luz, Slate, the Daily Mail, Business Insider, and Fotofilmic, to name a few, and he was among 100 photographers that participated in the Review Santa Fe Photo Symposium (2012, 2018, 2019). Chirinos is a professor of photography at Miami Dade College.
