NATIONAL BOOK FOUNDATION PRESENTS: CELEBRATING THE 2025 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD HONOREES FOR NONFICTION

CALEB GAYLE is an award-winning journalist and the author of We Refuse to Forget: A True Story of Black Creeks, American Identity, and Power. A professor at Northeastern University, he is a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine and his work has also appeared in The Atlantic, Time, The Guardian, Guernica, The New Republic, and The Boston Globe.

CLAUDIA ROWE has been writing about the clash between kids and government policy for 34 years – within public schools, juvenile detention halls, and the child welfare system. She is the recipient of a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and multiple honors for investigative reporting. Her work has been twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. She has been published in The New York Times, The Seattle Times, Mother Jones, and numerous other publications. In 2018, her memoir, The Spider and the Fly, won the Washington State Book Award.

HELEN WHYBROW is the author of A Man Apart and Dead Reckoning. She is also the editor of the anthologies Hearth and Coming to Land in a Troubled World. Her writing has appeared in Cagibi, Hunger Mountain, EatingWell, and Orion.

JORDAN THOMAS is an anthropologist and former Los Padres hotshot wildland firefighter. His work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Seattle Times, and The Drift. He is a Marshall Scholar with graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge and Durham University, and is currently a Chancellor’s fellow at the University of California.

LANA LIN is a writer, artist, and filmmaker based in New York and Connecticut. She is the author of the book Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects: Fractured Subjectivity in the Face of Cancer, and film and video works that include The Cancer Journals Revisited. Her various works and collaborative projects (with Lan Thao Lam as “Lin + Lam”) have exhibited at festivals and art and educational spaces throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and New Museum, New York; and The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Having had three years of psychoanalytic training before dropping out, she sometimes still dreams of becoming a psychoanalyst one day.

NILO TABRIZY is an investigative reporter at The Washington Post. She works for the visual forensics team, where she covers Iran using open-source methods. Previously, she was a video journalist at The New York Times, covering Iran, race and policing, abortion access, and more. She is an Emmy nominee and the 2022 winner of the Front Page Award for Online Investigative Reporting. She received an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University and a B.A. in political science and French from the University of British Columbia.
