Lisa Genova & Daniel Bergner With Melodie Winawer: A Conversation
In Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting, neuroscientist and novelist Lisa Genova explores how we remember, why we forget, and what we can do to protect our memories. You might even be worried that your memory lapses could be an early sign of Alzheimer’s or dementia. But, as it turns out, forgetting is part of being human. In The Mind and the Moon: My Brother’s Story, the Science of Our Brains and the Search for Our Psyches, Daniel Bergner recounts his brother’s journey (who, diagnosed as bipolar, took heavy doses of medications with devastating side effects), as well as Caroline’s, beset by hallucinations, and David’s, who’s overtaken by depression. Bergner raises profound questions about how we understand ourselves and the divide between brains and minds. Moderating is novelist Melodie Winawer – a physician and fellow neuroscientist who’s delved into this topic before with Genova – whose latest work of historical fiction is Anticipation: A Novel.
