Tiphanie Yanique’s Monster in the Middle follows Fly and Stella across decades, from the United States to the Virgin Islands to Ghana and back again, as they deal with their families’ lore and love stories now shaping their own experience. To answer the question “Who are we meant to be with?” we must first understand who we are and how we came to be. Fiercely independent Opal, the central character in Dawnie Walton’s The Final Revival of Opal & Nev, embodied Afro-punk before the term existed. Still, as one-half of a duo with aspiring British singer/songwriter Neville Charles, she was finding her niche. But then a violent, life-changing incident threw her dreams into chaos. And repercussions are always harsher for women who dare to speak their truth – especially Black women. Moderated by Jill Tracey, longtime Hot 105 FM radio personality.
