Miami Book Fair presents First Draft, a series of informal writing events that turn happy hours into great stories. You’re inspired. But you’re also thirsty. Bring your own drink and log in for a First Draft event and a guided writing prompt. Share your writing. You never know what you might knock out as you knock one back!

A guided writing prompt with a twist.

Because writing is thirsty work.

Have a drink. Write a story. Have another drink. Write a better story.

Theme: When the Truth Hurts: Writing About Family, Friends, and Lovers

Family, friends, past loves—these are often the sources of inspiration for writers, no matter the genre. These topics are also minefields that can blow our relationships to smithereens. Can we avoid the anger, jealousy, hurt, and resentment generated by our writing (no matter how honestly we think we’re do it) about the important people in our past and present? How can we prepare ourselves and others for the fallout? Should we even try? Join fiction writer and memoirist Nicholas Garnett for a discussion of the consequences, including the unintended ones, of our artistic choices on our real-world lives.

Nicholas Garnett received his MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University (FIU). He has taught creative writing at FIU, the Miami Book Fair, and Writing Class Radio. Garnett is the recipient of residencies from the the Vermont Studio Center, the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, the Norman Mailer Art Colony, and Writers in Paradise. His writing has appeared in Salon.com, The Florida Book Review, Truehumor.com, and anthologized in the “Best of the Net,” and Best Sex Writing (Cleis Press), among others. His memoir, IN THE PINK, was recently published by MidTown Press. When he’s not writing, Nicholas plays the drums and collects vintage record players. He lives with his wife and two stepsons near Miami, Florida. More about Nicholas can be found at www.nicholasgarnett.com.
