African Americans in Florida’s History
In White Sand, Black Beach: Civil Rights, Public Space, and Miami’s Virginia Key, historian and longtime Miami activist Gregory Bush recounts this unique story and the current state of public space in South Florida, which are intimately interwoven with the history of segregation. Marvin Dunn’s A History of Florida: Through Black Eyes recounts the history of Florida with a focus on the untold contributions of African-Americans. Investigating this dark period of the state’s history and focusing on a rash of anti-black violence that took place during the 1940s, Tameka Hobbs‘ Democracy Abroad, Lynching at Home explores the reasons why lynchings continued in Florida when they were starting to wane elsewhere.
