THREE MASTERS OF HORROR – FICTION
In Quan Barry’s The Unveiling, Black film scout Striker photographs locations for a big-budget film, only to become stranded with wealthy tourists after a kayaking disaster. Amid desolate Antarctic islands, geothermal vents, and vicious wildlife, survival forces the revelation of the group’s secrets, prejudices, and inner demons, including truths from Striker’s past that could irrevocably shatter her world. Stephen Graham Jones’ The Buffalo Hunter Hunter follows a vampire haunting the Blackfeet reservation in search of justice. When a pastor’s diary from 1912 emerges, it reveals a slow massacre tying back to 217 Blackfeet deaths in the snow. Told through interviews with Good Stab, a Blackfeet man recounting his peculiar life, this historical horror novel delivers an American Indian revenge story. Only three scenes of Horror Movie, an art-house horror flick shot in 1993, were ever released – but three decades later, in Paul Tremblay’s Horror Movie: A Novel, Hollywood wants a big-budget reboot. The surviving cast member remembers the secrets in the original screenplay, and the crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. Still, he’s going to help producers complete the film – but at what cost?
