Led by professional songwriter INEZ BARLATIER, you’ll draw on themes found in Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street and discuss how they lend themselves to lyrics, melody, and chord progression, then craft an original song which you’ll perform together as a group at the end of class. No prior songwriting experience necessary!

Inez Barlatier is an Ayisyen-American singer, songwriter, musician & actor with over two decades of performance history. Her music is inspired by her Ayisyen heritage and is featured in award-winning films; Razing Liberty Square (Katja Esson) on PBS, Madame Pipi (Rachelle Salnave) & Ludi and Grown (Edson Jean). Her children’s show, AYITI: Stories & Songs from Haiti, continues to educate over 200k children and families across the Americas with interactive singing, drumming, dancing and storytelling. She is currently an actress in ongoing theater plays, F.Punk Junkies (Teo Castellanos) , IAMME (Adrienne Arsht Center) & Sharing Grandmothers (FundArte). Inez’s work has been featured internationally as well as in her hometown; Miami’s CBS 4 News, NBC 6 News, WSFL-TV, Island TV, PBS, NPR, WLRN, WDNA, iiipoints, Miami New Times and The Miami Herald.
