INTERGENERATIONAL STORIES: ON FAMILY & RESILIENCE

ANA MENÉNDEZ has published five books of fiction: The Apartment: A Novel (Counterpoint, 2023); Adios, Happy Homeland!; The Last War: A Novel; Loving Che: A Novel; and In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd, whose title story won a Pushcart Prize. She has worked as a journalist in the United States and abroad, most recently as a prize-winning columnist for the Miami Herald. As a reporter, she wrote about Cuba, Haiti, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and India. Menéndez’s work has also appeared in Vogue, Bomb, The New York Times, and Tin House, and has been included in several anthologies, including The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature. She has a B.A. in English from Florida International University and an MFA from New York University. From 2008 to 2009, she lived in Cairo, Egypt, as a Fulbright Scholar. She has also lived in India, Turkey, Slovakia, and the Netherlands, where she designed a creative writing minor at Maastricht University in 2011. For the past 20 years, Menéndez has taught at various writing conferences and programs, most recently at Bread Loaf and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. She lives in Miami and is currently an associate professor at Florida International University, with joint appointments in English and the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab.

CRISTINA GARCÍA is the author of eight novels, including Dreaming in Cuban: A Novel, The Agüero Sisters: A Novel, Monkey Hunting: A Novel, A Handbook to Luck, The Lady Matador's Hotel: A Novel, King of Cuba: A Novel, and Here in Berlin: A Novel. García's work has been nominated for a National Book Award and translated into 15 languages. She's currently a resident playwright at Central Works Theater in Berkeley, California. Her latest book, Vanishing Maps: A Novel (Knopf) is the much-anticipated follow-up to Dreaming in Cuban.

M. EVELINA GALANG is the author of When the Hibiscus Falls: Stories (Coffee House Press), 17 tales capturing the lives of Filipino and Filipino American women and their ancestors. She has previously written Her Wild American Self: Short Stories, One Tribe: A Novel and Angel De La Luna and the Fifth Glorious Mystery, and the nonfiction book Lola's House: Filipino Women Living with War. She also edited the anthology Screaming Monkeys: Critiques of Asian American Images. Galang directed the creative writing program at the University of Miami from 2009-2019.

PATRICIA ENGEL is the author of The Faraway World: Stories (Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster), a collection of 10 short works of fiction. Her previous titles include the New York Times bestseller Infinite Country: A Novel; The Veins of the Ocean: A Novel, winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize; It's Not Love, It's Just Paris: A Novel; and Vida. Her stories have appeared in The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Mystery Stories, The O.
