MIAMI: PUNK ROCK CITY

CHRIS POTASH wrote about music, film, and art in South Florida for the weekly Wave and daily Miami News from 1986 through 1988. His “Off the Record” column gave him insider access to local and touring acts from Dee Dee Ramone to Public Enemy. Potash compiled and edited The Jimi Hendrix Companion: Three Decades of Commentary (1996) and Reggae, Rasta, Revolution: Jamaican Music from Ska to Dub (1997), both for Schirmer Books. He has since worked as an in-house and freelance book editor, video producer, and marketing professional. He currently lives near Philadelphia.

JILL KAHN took many iconic images of the bands, clubs, and people involved in the SFLA alternative music and culture scene in the 1980s through the 2017 Miami Punk Rock High Reunion at Churchill's Hideaway, and she continues working as a professional photographer today. She played bass for a decade in the Mach 3 version of the Miami band the Psycho Daisies and is an active member of the Florida chapter of the Recording Academy, joining in advocating for musicians' rights. Her images are featured throughout and on the cover of Punk Under the Sun: '80s Punk and New Wave in South Florida.

JOEY SEEMAN is a writer, graphic designer, painter, and DJ. His works have been published in Spin, Art Alternatives, Ocean Drive, and Juxtapoz, and been shown in galleries in Los Angeles, Dallas, Portland, and Miami, including the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. During the burgeoning South Beach art scene of the early 1990s, Seeman collaborated with artist Tomatâ Du Plenty (lead singer of the seminal LA punk band The Screamers), staging numerous exhibitions in alternative spaces. He is a Miami native currently living in Dallas.

LESLIE WIMMER co-founded the Open Books and Records record store in 1979 in South Florida and the Open Records recording label in the early '80s. The label released the first singles, EP, and Live at the Button album by Charlie Pickett & the Eggs, and in 1982, the era-defining compilation album The Land That Time Forgot, which featured several important first-wave Florida alternative bands.
