Registration: $35

In this seminar, we will discuss what an agent does, the Big 5 Publishers vs. Indie Publishers, what the publication process looks like, the money of publishing, and other “publishing overview” questions and concerns. We will also go over the dos and don’ts of the query letter, with sample letters provided as examples. If there is interest and time, we will discuss the elements of a book proposal. We will have ample time and opportunity for Q&A from writers throughout the 90 minutes.

Rayhané Sanders is a literary agent at Massie & McQuilkin with over a dozen years of industry experience. She began her career at Newsweek Magazine, before moving to book publishing, working for Penguin Group USA and then for William Morris Endeavor, where she worked with veteran agent Dorian Karchmar and such bestselling authors as Amor Towles, Jennifer Haigh, Daniel James Brown, and Kate Jacobs. Rayhané began to represent her own authors at WSK Management, where she worked with bestselling authors and leading broadcast journalists, before moving to Massie & McQuilkin in 2014.

She represents literary, historical, and upmarket book club fiction; narrative nonfiction; and memoir. Her clients include bestselling authors Lidia Yuknavitch, Te-Ping Chen, Janet Beard, Matthew Gavin Frank, Daisy Hernández, and more. She is a member of the American Association of Literary Agents (formerly AAR). You may find her Writer’s Digest profile here.

As an independent book editor, Rayhané offers a wide range of editorial and consulting services to help emerging authors polish their fiction and non-fiction projects—both completed manuscripts and book proposals.
