This panel of four Haitian women writers will address the impact of their Haitian and Haitian-American identity(ies) on their writing and the ways they navigate (hyper)visibility and erasure to honor Caribbean aesthetics. Join Marilène Phipps, author of Unseen Worlds, Katia D. Ulysse, author of Mouths Don’t Speak, and Fabienne Josaphat, author of Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, as they discuss the ways in which their writings respond to cultural presumptions about Haitian identity. Moderated by Edwidge Danticat.

Edwidge Danticat

Edwidge Danticat was born in Haiti in 1969 and came to the United States when she was twelve years old. She graduated from Barnard College and received an M.F.A. from Brown University. Following her auspicious debut, the novel Breath, Eyes, Memory (and Oprah’s Book Club selection), Danticat has gone on to author and edit many acclaimed and award-winning works of fiction and nonfiction, including Krik? Krak! (a National Book Award finalist) The Farming of Bones (an American Book Award winner) Behind the Mountains, The Dew Breaker, Claire of the Sea Light and Brother, I’m Dying, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and a winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. She has also written several young adult novels and a travel narrative, After the Dance, A Walk Through Carnival in Jacmel. Her memoir, The Art of Death: Writing the Final Story (Graywolf Press) is at once a personal account of her mother dying from cancer and a deeply considered reckoning with the ways that other writers have approached death in their own work. Danticat is also a contributor to Writing Hard Stories: Celebrated Memoirists Who Shaped Art from Trauma (Beacon Press), in which some of the country’s most admired authors describe their treks through dark memories and attest to the healing power of putting words to experience. She also provides the foreword to the newly published English translation of the novel Hadriana in All My Dreams (Akashic), by René Depestre, one of the most important voices of Haitian literature. Katia D. Ulysse

Katia D. Ulysse is a fiction writer, born in Haiti. Her short stories, essays, and Pushcart Prize–nominated poetry appear in numerous literary journals and anthologies, including: The Caribbean Writer, Smartish Pace, Phoebe, Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism; Mozayik, The Butterfly's Way: Voices from the Haitian Dyaspora in the United States, and Haiti Noir, edited by Edwidge Danticat. She has taught in Baltimore public schools for thirteen years and served as Goucher College's Spring 2017 Kratz Writer in Residence. Mouths Don't Speak (Akashic Books) is her latest novel. No one was prepared for the massive earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, taking over a quarter-million lives, and leaving millions of others homeless. Three thousand miles away, Jacqueline Florestant mourns the presumed death of her parents, while her husband, a former US Marine and combat veteran, cares for their three-year-old daughter as he fights his own battles with acute PTSD. Horrified and guilt-ridden, Jacqueline returns to Haiti in search of the proverbial "closure." Unfortunately, the Haiti she left as a child twenty-five years earlier has disappeared. Marilène Phipps

Marilène Phipps held fellowships at the Guggenheim Foundation, and at Harvard's Bunting Institute, W.E.B. Du Bois Institute, and the Center for the Study of World Religions. Her collection, The Company of Heaven: Stories from Haiti, won the Iowa Short Fiction Award. Her collection, Crossroads and Unholy Water won the Crab Orchard Poetry Prize. Her work has appeared in many publications such as The Best American Short Stories, Haiti Noir: The Classics, The Beacon Best, Ploughshares, River Styx, Callaloo, and Harvard Divinity Bulletin. She is the author of Unseen Worlds: Adventures at the Crossroads of Vodou Spirits and Latter-day Saints (Calumet Editions). The extraordinary life of Marilène Phipps began in Haiti -- the magical island of African Vodou gods, and the world's first black republic -- the singular cultural context and exotic milieu of the Caribbean, where hell and paradise can transfix us daily.
