DAUGHTERS OF LATIN AMERICA: A CONVERSATION

ANJANETTE DELGADO is a Puerto Rican writer and journalist based in Miami. She is the author of The Heartbreak Pill: A Novel and The Clairvoyant of Calle Ocho. She has written for The New York Times' "Modern Love" column, Vogue, NPR, HBO, Kenyon Review, Pleiades, The Hong Kong Review, and other publications. She is also a contributor to the collection Daughters of Latin America: An International Anthology of Writing by Latine Women (Amistad). ANJANETTE DELGADO nació en Puerto Rico en 1967. DAÍNA CHAVIANO is an expatriate Cuban author of novels, novellas, short stories, and scripts for film and television. Her first book, the short story collection Los mundos que amo/The Worlds I Love, written while she attended the University of Havana, became an instant classic. Some of her subsequent books include Amoroso planeta/Loving Planet, Historias de hadas para adultos/Fairy Tales for Adults, and Fábulas de una abuela extraterrestre/Fables from an Extraterrestrial Grandmother. She defected to the United States in 1991, worked as a journalist and translator for El Nuevo Herald, and wrote a four-book series of novels called The Occult Side of Havana. The fourth entry, La isla de los amores infinitos/The Island of Eternal Love, was widely translated.

ELIZABETH ACEVEDO is the New York Times-bestselling author of The Poet X, a recipient of the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Michael L. Printz Award, and the Pura Belpré Award, among others. She is also the author of With the Fire on High and Clap When You Land. She holds a BA in performing arts from George Washington University and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Maryland. A former fellow of Cave Canem and CantoMundo, Acevedo is a National Poetry Slam champion. A Family Lore: A Novel (Ecco) is her first work for adults.

ESMERALDA SANTIAGO is the author of Conquistadora: A Novel and When I Was Puerto Rican: A Memoir and Almost A Woman: A Memoir, which was adapted into a Peabody Award-winning movie for PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she lives with her husband, documentary filmmaker Frank Cantor, in New York, and Port Clyde, Maine.

SANDRA GUZMÁN is a feminist author, translator, and documentary filmmaker. She is one of the producers of The Pieces I Am, a film about the art and life of her literary mentor Toni Morrison; was editor of Latina and Heart & Soul magazines; and is the author of The New Latina’s Bible. Her work has been anthologized and featured on American Masters PBS, HBO, NBC News, CNN, Audubon, USA Today, Telemundo, and El Diario-La Prensa, among other media outlets.

SOLEDAD O’BRIEN is an award-winning documentarian, journalist, speaker, author, and philanthropist, and the founder of Soledad O’Brien Productions, a media production company dedicated to telling empowering and authentic stories on a range of social issues. She anchors and produces Matter of Fact with Soledad O'Brien, a Hearst political magazine program seen in 95% of the country; is a correspondent for HBO Real Sports; has provided congressional testimony on media disinformation; and was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of fame in May 2023. O’Brien’s impact nationwide has been disseminated via her op-eds, social media, speeches, and books, including her critically acclaimed memoir, The Next Big Story, and her 1.3 million X followers. She has anchored shows and specials on CNN, MSNBC, NBC’s Today Show, NatGeo, BET, ABC, and CBS. Soledad O’Brien Productions’ most recent projects include the Peabody Award-winning documentary, The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks – which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and streams on Peacock – and the multipart series Black and Missing, which won Independent Spirit and NAACP awards and streams on HBO. Other productions have appeared on Discovery Plus, CNN, BET, PBS, and other outlets. She also works with major foundations, like Ford and Gates, to produce impactful documentaries on topics like hunger, race, and education.
