Caribbean Voices: Rising Tides

Dominique Lancastre is from Vieux-Habitants in Guadeloupe. After high school, he attended Université de Paris-12, where he obtained a D.E.U.G. (Diplôme d’études universitaires générales, roughly equivalent to an associate degree), a bachelor’s degree in American art and civilization, and a master’s degree in American studies. He later received a D.E.A. (Diplôme d’Études Approfondies, a doctoral degree) in American studies. His master’s thesis topic under the direction of Catherine Collomp focused on educational inequality in the United States. Dominique studied Chinese and Japanese for three years at the National Institute of Eastern Languages and Civilizations (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, INALCO) in Paris. He’s served as an English in several middle and high schools of Académie Paris-Versailles-Créteil, as a jury member for the competitive examination, and as a jury member, grader and examiner for the Baccalaureate exam. In January of 2015 he founded the multicultural magazine www.pluton-magazine.com. He is currently part of the commercial crew for British Airways. He is the author of La Véranda (translated in Martinique and Guadeloupe Creole in 2019), Retour à la Grivelière, Une Femme chambardée, and Tambours du silence (forthcoming in 2019). He contributes to collective works such as Nouvelles des Mondes Créoles under the direction of Raphael Confiant with authors like Dany Laferrière.   Dominique Lancastre est originaire de Vieux-Habitants en Guadeloupe. (Diplôme d’études universitaires générales), une Licence en lettres et civilisations américaines et en 1989 une Maîtrise en Études Américaines. Il y suit une année d’études complémentaires en D.E.A. (Diplôme d’Études Approfondies), toujours en Études Américaines. Son sujet de maîtrise sous la direction de Catherine Collomp (directrice de maîtrise) porte sur l’inégalité scolaire aux États-Unis. En parallèle, il va suivre des études de chinois et de japonais pendant trois ans à l’Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) à Paris. Il sera professeur d’anglais dans divers lycées et collèges de l’Académie Paris-Versailles-Créteil, jury de concours, jury du Bac, correcteur et examinateur. En janvier 2015 il fonde www.pluton-magazine.com un magazine pluriculturel. Il est actuellement Personnel Navigant Commercial à British Airways. Il a publié La véranda (traduit depuis en créole Martinique et Guadeloupe en 2019), Retour à la Grivelière, Une femme chambardée, et est l'auteur du nouveau recueil publié en 2019 Tambours du silence. Il participe à des ouvrages collectifs comme Nouvelles des mondes créoles sous la direction de Raphael confiant avec des auteurs comme Dany Laferrière.

Ernest Pépin was born in Lamentin (Guadeloupe) in 1950. After teaching French for some time, he served as director of cultural affairs at the General Council of Guadeloupe. Now retired, he dedicates his time to his writing career.   Ernest Pépin est né au Lamentin (Guadeloupe) en 1950. Après avoir été professeur de français. Il a occupé les fonctions de Directeur des Affaires culturelles au Conseil Général de la Guadeloupe. Retraité, il continue sa carrière d'écrivain.

Born in Port-au-Prince (Haiti) in 1956, Lyonel Trouillot pursued a law degree. At an early age, he became fascinated with literature and contributed poetry and critical texts to various newspapers and periodicals in Haiti and the diaspora. He wrote the lyrics to many of the songs by Tambou Libète, Manno Charlemagne, Toto Bissainthe, Jean Coulanges and Atis Endepandan. A journalist and literature professor, he co-founded the periodicals Lakansyèl, Tèm and Langaj. Lyonel Trouillot is currently a member of the editorial board of the magazine Cahiers du Vendredi and the co-director of the anthology that bears the same name.   Né à Port-au-Prince (Haïti) le 31 décembre 1956, Lyonel Trouillot a fait des études de droit. Fasciné par la littérature depuis son plus jeune âge, il a collaboré à différents journaux et revues d’Haïti et de la diaspora dans lesquels il a publié de nombreux poèmes et textes critiques; il a également écrit des textes de chansons interprétées par Tambou Libète, Manno Charlemagne, Toto Bissainthe, Jean Coulanges et Atis Endepandan. Professeur de littérature, journaliste, co-fondateur des revues Lakansyèl, Tèm et Langaj, Lyonel Trouillot est aujourd’hui membre du Collectif de la revue Cahiers du Vendredi et co-directeur de la collection du même nom.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Yamile Stitt studied abroad, in Europe and the United States. She returned to the islands for a while—Haiti and the Dominican Republic—but Florida has been “home” to her and her family for decades. Today, with her children grown and raising families of their own, she balances life as an interpreter and a writer. Writing has been her childhood dream and lifelong passion: “I was always an avid reader. My fondest childhood memories in Haiti take me back to blissful times of solitude with my favorite books. The summer of my eleventh birthday, with my special Parker fountain pen, I wrote my first ‘novel’ on a student notebook, full of ink stains and erasures.” A closet writer for years, with stacks of poems and short stories in her personal files, Yamile Stitt is the author of Memories in Technicolor, a coming-of-age novel set against the colorful backdrop of tumultuous and profound times on the world stage.   Yamilé Stitt est l’auteur du roman « Les Chemins de Lumière » (EducaVision, 2016) qui nous entraîne dans le sillage d’une adolescente qui découvre la vie et ses surprises à une époque où le monde se réinvente. D’Haïti, sous la dictature de François Duvalier, à la terre accueillante de France où elle séjourne en pension, pour aboutir aux Etats-Unis à l’ère de la guerre du Viêt-Nam et la contre-culture hippie, ce roman relate le parcours géographique, culturel, sentimental et spirituel d’une Haïtienne à la fin des années soixante. Dix ans plus tard, la jeune femme, née des cendres de l’adolescence, met le point final à son journal et son histoire… Sa vie vient de former un cercle parfait !
