What We Do
Read to Learn Books for Free is a program of The Children’s Trust in partnership with Miami Book Fair at Miami Dade College. Our goal is to get more books in the hands of children – books they can keep to read with their families over and over again. We achieve this goal by delivering approximately 3,500 books per week to 58 free bookshelf locations through Miami-Dade County. These books are free for the taking by children and their caregivers.
Why We Do It
Studies prove students who master reading and writing are more successful throughout their academic careers—they have better job prospects and earning potential, and are more engaged in cultural and civic activities—yet nearly half of Miami’s 3rd graders fail to read at basic level. Access to engaging and age-appropriate literature is the cornerstone of good reading habits, but only 1 in 300 children in the U.S. own a book at home. Luckily, there is something you can do to change it, and it could be as simple as donating a book.
Thank You to our Read to Learn Sponsors!
Your sponsorship helps to keep our 65 book shelves stocked with books year round for the children of Miami-Dade County. Interested in becoming a sponsor? Contact Annalisa Damley at 305-237-7837.
What Types of Books Do You Accept?
We rely heavily on book donations in order to keep our bookshelves stocked all year long! If you have gently used books at home, we will gladly accept them! We’re especially in need of children’s books, baby books and first readers.
Where Do I Donate the Books?
We have ongoing book drives at many locations throughout Miami-Dade County. Look for one of our green donation bins at a book drive nearest you. Click here for a map of donation bin locations.
