On Writing Younger Protagonists in Adult Fiction with Moriel Rothman-Zecher
In many literary novels that are geared toward adults but centered around teenage characters, various devices are used to clarify that the narrator or protagonist should be understood as older —32, say, or 40, or 79— and thus as being in possession of a more serious or mature perspective as they look back on their younger self. In this craft talk, Moriel Rothman-Zecher, whose debut literary novel, Sadness Is a White Bird, centers around a friendship among three teenagers, and is told from the perspective of a nineteen year-old narrator, will discuss the cases in which there is literary, tonal, and perhaps even ethical benefit to be had in allowing younger characters and narrators to “speak for themselves” in adult fiction, and how these characters can be written authentically, without sacrificing the eloquence, wisdom, complexity and nuance sometimes provided by the mediating device of older narrators looking back.
