SUMMARY:Character Development Workshop: Get to Know Your People with Sara Benincasa
DESCRIPTION:4-Day Workshop\nWednesday – Saturday\, May 9 – 12 | 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nBlending in-class readings and lots of writing exercises\, we’ll use the fiction workshop as a space to really get to know your characters. Come to class with no idea who you’ll create\, or arrive with someone half-formed in your mind. We’ll find out what your characters want\, what they need\, how they move\, whom they love. By the end of the workshop you may know your characters better than you know your best friend or yourself. (You’ll even know what they had for breakfast.) \nSara Benincasa is a screenwriter\, recovering stand-up comedian and the author of Real Artists Have Day Jobs\, DC Trip\, Great\, and Agorafabulous!: Dispatches From My Bedroom. In 2016 she published a silly joke book called Tim Kaine Is Your Nice Dad that inexplicably ended up an Amazon bestseller\, with 50% of proceeds to Great Expectations\, a foster youth nonprofit. In 2017\, she adapted DC Trip as a screenplay with Bona Fide\, Gunpowder & Sky\, and Adaptive Studios. She adapted Agorafabulous! as a pilot with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody. She acts occasionally and appeared this year on “Corporate” on Comedy Central; other recent roles include “The Jim Gaffigan Show” on TVLand (2016) and the critically acclaimed short film “The Focus Group” (2016)\, which she also wrote. Born and raised in NJ\, she attended Emerson College\, graduated from Warren Wilson College\, and got an MA from Teachers College at Columbia University.
