John Jacobsen's debut novel, A Commodore of Errors (Skyhorse, $22.95), describes the attempt by the second in command at the United States Merchant Marine Academy to oust his skirt-chasing commander.  Plot twists and mayhem ensue.  Jacobsen, a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, spent fifteen years as a ship’s officer on cargo and passenger vessels. He is a harbor pilot in the Port of Miami and the chairman of the Biscayne Bay Pilots.

 

Jim Ray Daniels

Jim Ray Daniels's Trigger Man:More Tales of the Motor City (Michigan State Press, $19.95), is a collection of stories capturing the gritty spirit of Detroit and the sometimes grim circumstances of the characters shaped by its industry and economics. Daniels, a Pushcart Prize winner, is also the author of the story collections, Detroit Tales and Mr. Pleasant, and numerous poetry collections.

 

Jess Row

In Jess Row's short story collection, influenced by the aftermath of 9/11, Nobody Ever Gets Lost (Five Chapter Books, $11.50), individuals wrestle with identity, religion, co-existence, and pain as they try to live in a world forever changed by terror. Row’s first collection, The Train To Lo Wu, explored the heart of modern of Hong Kong.
