The Writer’s Voice: Jing Yi, Hong Ying, Carine Fabius, and Kola Boof on their new work

Jing Yi

Jing Yi is the principal of the Juaxia School of Traditional Culture.  She has devoted herself to the promulgation of traditional Chinese culture through education.  Quing is a member of the Foundation for Preserving Chinese Traditional Culture, a guest professor of Sinology at Tsinghua University, and the deputy president and secretary-general of the Xuzhou Confucius Institute.  Yi is the author of several books, including The Wisdom of The Great Learning and Simple Explanation to Heart Sutra.

 

Hong Ying

Hong Lin has established herself as one of China's top novelists.  Best known in English for the novels K: the Art of Love, Summer of Betrayal, Peacock Cries, and her autobiography Daughter of the River, Hong Ying has been published in twenty- nine languages and has appeared on the bestseller lists of numerous countries.

 

Carine Fabius

Set in the early 90s in Haiti and Miami, Carine Fabius's Saturday Comes: A Novel of Love and Vodou (Kouraj Press), is narrated by Baron Samedi, the Vodou spirit of death and sex.  Fabius, a frequent blogger on Huffington Post, is the author of Mehndi, the Art of Henna Body Painting; Ceremonies for Real Life; Sex, Cheese and French Fries—Women are Perfect, Men are from France; and Jagua, A Journey into Body Art from the Amazon.

 

Kola Boof

Kola Boof's novel, The Sexy Part of the Bible (Akashic, $15.95), is set in modern West Africa, Europe and the U.S., and features the beautiful supermodel Eternity, a spirited and diabolical young African, stigmatized by a heart-stopping secret.  "Boof spins surrealism, sci-fi, racial politics, feminism, religious debate, and postcolonial theory into a thought-provoking, suspenseful novel . . . ," says Publishers Weekly.
