Inspired by her mother's poesiealbum (poetry album), which survived her childhood retreat from Nazi Germany in 1938, Debbie Levy's The Year of Goodbyes: A true story of friendship, family and farewells (Hyperion, $16.99) recounts her mom's happy childhood, which gradually becomes darker and more frightening as Germany begins its descent into madness. Intended for readers in grades 5-8 and told in free-verse, the book includes reproductions of the original drawings, poems and photos.
