Nicholas Lemann

Nicholas Lemann is dean and Henry R. Luce professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.  He is a journalist, editor, and author of several books on 20th century American history. Lemann has published five books, including Redemption: The Last Battle of the Civil War; The Big Test: The Secret History of the American Meritocracy, which helped lead to a major reform of the SAT; and The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America, which won several book prizes and is considered a definitive work of American history. He has written widely for such publications as The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, TheNew Republic, and Slate.

Mirta Ojito

Columbia Journalism Professor Mirta Ojito’s life has taken an extraordinary path from Cuba - which she left at age 16 in the 1980 Mariel boat lift –all the way to The New York Times; a shared Pulitzer Prize; teaching and book writing.  Ojito’s first book, Finding Mañana: A Memoir of a Cuban Exodus (Penguin Press, $16.00), was released in 2005.  She is now working on Hunting Season: A Story of Home, Immigration and Murder, which will be released next year by Beacon Press, and she continues to write for a variety of publications in both English and Spanish.
