Author(s) and Guest(s)

Marjorie Liu

Marjorie Liu is an attorney and the New York Times bestselling author of urban fantasy and paranormal romance -- as well as comic books for Marvel.  In her latest, Astonishing X-Men: Northstar (Marvel, $24.99), illustrated by Mike Perkins,  The X-Men return to New York City, but it's not a social call - the Marauders are back! Something from Northstar's past has resurfaced and is looking for revenge - and when his boyfriend Kyle goes missing, will Northstar choose him or the team?

Dan Parent

Dan Parent is a comic book artist and writer best known for his work for Archie Comics. Archie stepped into uncharted territory when Parent created the series’ first openly gay character, Kevin Keller. The character received national attention, positive reviews, and became the first Archie comic book to sell out in its 69-year history.  The success of that comic resulted in a new series, the first of which is Kevin Keller: Welcome to Riverdale (Archie and Friends All-Stars) (Archie Comics, $11.99).   Kevin Keller is sure making a splash at Riverdale High! Recently elected class president, Kevin has gone from new kid in town to one of the most well-known and popular students in school. Things change, though, when he decides to ask his romantically-challenged friends Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead for advice.

Ellen Forney

What happens when creative eccentricities shift over to true mental disorder?  Cartoonist Ellen Forney gets to the heart of the matter in her graphic memoir, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me (Gotham Books Paperback Original, $19.95). At first, Forney’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder felt like a badge of honor. But the emotional rollercoaster, the long process of finding the right balance of medication, the reaction of family and friends turned out to be more horror house than amusement park.  “Forney is at the height of her powers as she explores the tenuous line between mood disorders and creativity itself.”—Alison Bechdel. Forney created the Eisner-nominated comic books I Love Led Zeppelin and Monkey Food, and collaborated with Sherman Alexie on the National Book Award-winning novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Stephanie McMillan

Political cartoonist Stephanie McMillan provides a graphic look at the evolution of discontent into a full-blown Occupy Movement in The Beginning of the American Fall (Seven Stories, $16.95). Using drawings, interviews, dialogue, description, and reflections, the book chronicles the first several months of the fragile and contradictory movement. “Razor-sharp critique packaged as cute-kid-and-funny-animal cartoon.”—Booklist.  McMillan began syndicating her political cartoons in 1999. Since then her work has appeared in dozens of publications and has been exhibited in museums across the country. A book based on her comic strip, Minimum Security, was published in 2005. Her graphic novel As the World Burns, written with Derrick Jensen, was published in 2007.

Riva Hocherman

Riva Hocherman is senior editor at Metropolitan Books in New York. After graduating from Jerusalem's Hebrew University, she worked in both book and magazine publishing in Israel, including at the Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature.

Riva Hocherman's appearance is cancelled.

Joan Hilty

Joan Hilty is a cartoonist and editor best known for the comic strip Bitter Girl and her tenure as a senior editor at DC Comics's Vertigo imprint. She is now the editor-in-chief of PageTurner, a book packager that specializes in graphic novels, as well as the owner of Studio Kabito, an independent editor specializing in genre fiction, nonfiction & graphic novels.
