Author(s) and Guest(s)
Richard Powers
Richard Powers, whose novels explore the influence of modern science and technology on individual human nature, earned an early reputation as a reclusive genius. He declined interview requests until the publication of his third book (The Gold Bug Variations, a New York Times Notable Book for 1991), and refused to allow a dust jacket photo until his fifth (Galatea 2.2, a finalist for the 1995 National Book Critics Circle Award). “I wanted the books to speak for themselves,” Powers told The Times. Noted for their intellectual prowess, profound humanity and soaring beauty, his novels have won numerous prizes, culminating in the 2006 National Book Award for The Echo Maker. His new novel, Generosity: An Enhancement (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux), explores what might happen if science identifies the genetic basis of happiness.
