The Emperor of Lies (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $30.00), by Swedish author, Steve Sem-Sandberg, tells the story of the Łódź ghetto and the man at its head: Mordechai Chaim Rumkowski, a sixty-three-year-old Jewish businessman and orphanage director, whose authoritarian rule over the ghetto defined its existence. Based on extensive archival material, the novel asks fundamental questions about the nature of evil, investigates the complicated motives behind Rumkowski’s actions, and brilliantly illuminates the ways in which people struggled to survive in the ghetto.
