Paul Buhle
We hear words like nosh, schlep and schmutz all the time, but how did these words come to pepper American English, and how do we intuitively know their meaning? In the comics anthology, Yiddishkeit: Jewish Vernacular and the New Land (Abrams, $29.95), award-winning authors Harvey Pekar and Paul Buhle trace the influence of Yiddish from medieval Europe to the tenements of New York’s Lower East Side. Pekar, who died in 2010, is best known for his groundbreaking autobiographical comic book series American Splendor. Buhle has written, coauthored, and edited forty-two books, including the award-winning The Art of Harvey Kurtzman.
