Lynne Barrett
In Lynne Barrett's short-story collection, Magpies (Carnegie-Mellon University Press, $17.95), characters move through the past decade's glitter and darkness. From the Internet's fragmented pages to a gossip columnist's sweet poison to the ABCs of a hurricane season, her stories explore storytelling as a means of connection, betrayal, and survival for characters who learn, sometimes too late, the value of what's grasped and what's lost. Barrett, an Edgar Award winner, is also the author of The Secret Names of Women and The Land of Go. She is also the editor of the ninth edition of Tigertail's annual poetry publication, Tigertail, A South Florida Annual: Florida Flash (Tigertail, $15.00.) This latest edition explores the edges and overlaps between lyrical and narrative approaches. Fifty-four authors with connections to Florida contribute prose poetry, flash fiction, and flash nonfiction — all limited to 305 words—a number representing the original South Florida area code as well as the limits of a single page.
