Kadir Nelson

Award-winning author/illustrator Kadir Nelson's children's book, We Are The Ship:  The Story of Negro League Baseball (Hyperion Books for Children, $18.99), is a tribute to the spirit of the Negro Leaguers.  The narrative, accompanied by Nelson's vibrant illustrations, is divided into nine innings, beginning with Rube Foster and his formation of the first Negro League in 1920 and closing with Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier into white major league baseball.        

Nelson's illustrated book for children 9 and up, Heart and Soul:  The Story of America and African Americans (HarperCollins, $19.99) is the compelling and inspiring story of our country through the lens of the African-American experience. Touching on some of the great transformative events and small victories of American history, Nelson demonstrates that in gaining their freedom and equal rights, African Americans helped our country achieve its promise of liberty and justice.  Nelson is the illustrator of nearly thirty books for children.
