Ana Menendez's Adios, Happy Homeland! (Grove/Atlantic, $14.00) takes the form of a creative anthology of interlinked tales, by writers conjured by Menéndez herself. A critical look at the life of the Cuban writer, Adios pulls apart and reassembles the myths that have come to define the culture. The author of three previous books of fiction, In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and whose title story won a Pushcart Prize; Loving Che; and The Last War. She is also a contributor to Blue Christmas; Holiday Stories for the Rest of Us (B&B Press, $17.00), the antidote to the forced frivolity, gratuitous gluttony, and crass commercialism of the holiday season.  Edited by John Dufresne, this collection of short stories by 17 authors, including Preston Allen, Steve Almond, Lynne Barrett, Colin Channer, Ann Hood, James W. Hall, and Les Standiford, offer up the gift of candor, suspense, and substance--showing that Christmas can be both the best of times and the worst of times.
